Welcome:

Based on over 30 years of scientific, peer-reviewed research, the HeartMath Institute has identified key skills that, with practice, improves our cognitive and emotional functioning.  These skills also help reduce stress and increase our resilience in facing challenging situations in our daily lives.  Kendal’s HeartMath Committee has formed to support residents learn and practice these skills. Towards this end the HeartMath Committee seeks to provide

  • opportunities to learn these basic skills from certified HeartMath professionals
  • encouragement to practice these skills on our own and in groups with other residents and staff
  • resources, such as video recordings and handouts, that support residents learn and share these skills with each other.
  • encouragement for staff to learn these skills as scheduling and time permits

Living with Heart Series:

During Fall 2021 Kendal’s HeartMath Committee and Kendal’s Health Services offered a special 4-part series presented by Master HeartMath Trainer Kimberly Gray. Each session was recorded and the links are located below along with a handout for each session.

Resilience Building Bouncing Back Groups

The Bouncing Back Practice Group is composed of a growing number of residents who learned basic HeartMath Skills with HeartMath Coach/Mentor, Trainer and resident, Lark Worth. We find that practicing together increases our resilience and ability to “bounce bacK” from daily and acute stressors. The group is currently convened by co-chairs, Susanna Davison and Betsey Rice. We meet via Zoom on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month from 3:00-4:00 pm on the zoom link below

Kendal-HearthMath Tree Appreciation Project

Kendal at Longwood has recently joined the HeartMath Institute Citizen Scientist Research Project to learn if there is a measurable response among trees around the world to large human emotional outpourings to significant world events such as tsunamis, earthquakes or humanitarian crises, such as war, famine, plagues etc.

Corollary research will also be able to demonstrate if there are measurable impacts from individual, small group or community wide appreciation of the trees in our community, and if appreciation of these trees can positively impact residents’ emotional well-being.

With the approval from the Arboretum Committee, Staff and Kendal Administration we have selected a Willow Oak located outside of the weaving room as our subject. The two tree sensors are carefully placed in the trunk, and a separate ground sensor at the base of the tree sends a continuous stream of live data through the gray Base Station Box to the HeartMath Network website for data collection and analysis.
